So, the Fossil took over yesterdays post, but I’m not sulking anymore. ‘Cause today we walked another section of my Walk 4 SOS Huskies journey starting from Kleinmond main beach.
The rain eased up around midday, so I took the Fossil for a walk from our Frank Robb Hut. We walked along a few Kleinmond streets, and down a pathway that leads towards the main road and the beach beyond. The Fossil again went into tourist-guide-like mode when he commented on a rain water sluice that runs along the side of the pathway. “Kleinmonders sure do look after their environment,” he said. “These rain water grid-nets stop a lot of pollution from entering the sea.”
The suburban pathway leads to a tunnel walkway beneath the main road, which I thought is pretty cool. It’s a lot safer than walking our humans across the road!
When we got the main beach my heart sank. There it was – the dreaded ‘No Dogs Allowed’ sign! “Calm down Jaxx. That sign is only for the main beach because it has Blue Flag status. I’m sure we’ll find a dog-friendly section further on,” said the Fossil.
And we did! There’s a coastal path that allows dogs to walk their humans on leashes.
So, I followed the coastal path, which has these wooden slat walkways to avoid the flora from being trampled by too many feet and paws…
… and they made the gaps between planks just narrow enough that my paws don’t slip through the gaps. Of course, I’ve got big paws so it’s cool for me but what about smaller dogs?
It rained for while during our walk and there were rain puddles everywhere so I had plenty to drink without having to ask the Fossil for water. I spotted a Cape grey mongoose and tried to catch it but the Fossil’s leash kept pulling me back.
After 4km, the path ended at the Palmiet River Lagoon that had breached the beach sandbank so we couldn’t carry on walking around the mountain to Betty’s Bay. So I walked the Fossil up the lagoon access road towards the R44 main road to get to Betty’s Bay that way. It’s only 8km but the Fossil pulled me back towards Kleinmond ’cause it started raining again. After about 5km along the main road we arrived back at our hosted hut lodging for tonight.
Tomorrow, I’ll walk the section from Betty’s Bay to Rooi Els. But that’s another story. Thanks for reading and sharing Husky loving folks!

BTW: if you happen to be anywhere along our walking route between Plettenberg Bay and Cape Town during late July to mid-August 2021, look out for us. We’ll be walking along the beach (or not), or on a hiking trail (unlikely), or along the side of a town road (most likely) – but definitely not along the N2 motorway!
