What a beautiful sunny Sunday morning for a walkies along the famous Hermanus Cliff Path! We left our overnight spot in the Mahindra PIKUP at Grotto Beach picnic site and parked at the main Blue Flag Beach parking lot ’cause there’s more security there.
In yesterdays post I mentioned that we walked the ‘Piet-Se-Bos’ section of the Cliff Path that passes through the “Kuspad Natuurreservaat” (Coastal Nature Reserve Path), so today we set off at 10h15 for Day 17 of our Walk 4 SOS Huskies journey starting from the Grotto Beach entrance.
Beginning has daily ‘tourist guide’ type lecture, the Fossil said; “The Cliff Path was incorporated into the Fernkloof Nature Reserve in 2000. Just imagine, Jaxx, if pathways like this were to be constructed along the entire South African coastline! What a unique tourism attraction that would be!”. Yeah, sure, as long as there’s no ‘No Dogs Allowed; signs anywhere, I thought.
Mind you, I kinda like the pathway idea. At least I got to meet (and sniff) other dogs that were being walked by their adopted humans!
From Grotto Beach, the path continued past places with names, like Voelklip and Kammabaai…
… and then we had to head back up to the main road ’cause there’s a section that’s walled off with a ‘No Entry – Construction Site’ sign on the other end. Wonder what they’re constructing? Even the Fossil had no clue!
After passing Langbaai bathing beach, the Mossel River, Kwaaiwater, and Siewers Punt, we walked along the Hermanus waterfront promenade. There some dogs there that have turned into statues!
And there’s signposts along the route that provide interesting facts about the Cliff Path fauna and flora…
… and signboards that tell all about the whales that we could see out there in the ocean…
… so we kept walking, and the Fossil kept talking, and I kept smelling those elusive Dassies that run away when they see me.
And finally, after about 9km, we came to the end point – at New Harbour.
And I had a brief water-stop rest before we headed back the way we’d come.
We eventually arrived back at Grotto Beach at 15h20, so it took us about four and a half hours (with plenty water/rest stops along the way) to walk there and back. Tonight we’re sleeping in the Mahindra PIKUP at our usual spot at Grotto Beach picnic site, just behind Dutchies Restaurant.

BTW: if you happen to be anywhere along our walking route between Plettenberg Bay and Cape Town during late July to mid-August 2021, look out for us. We’ll be walking along the beach (or not), or on a hiking trail (unlikely), or along the side of a town road (most likely) – but definitely not along the N2 motorway! Come over to say “Howzit Husky Boy!” (and ” Hello Fossil Man” if you want).
